8th Grade

Today we finished The Outsiders, and students completed a critique paper. They were also able to take the AR test on the novel if they haven’t already.

Next we did a writing activity in which students wrote one positive comment about each of their classmates, passing the papers around the circle, until each student had a page of positive memories from their eighth grade classmates.

Students completed their final diagramming sentences worksheet of the year. I’m confident they will know the parts of speech/parts of the sentence when they enter high school English next fall!

6th Grade

Today we read the “Asparagus” chapter in Esperanza aloud together. Students completed vocab and comprehension questions from the chapter.

Next we watched a video that explained the Labor Movement in America. (In Esperanza, the migrant farm workers are striking.)

Finally, students worked on a “School Year in Review” paper.

May 10, 2024

8th Grade

Students wrote a short essay on their favorite and least favorite things about elementary school.

We read Outsiders Ch. 11 with Audible and answered comprehension questions aloud.

Next we watched a short video on The Outsiders author, SE Hinton, who wrote the novel when she was only a junior in high school!

We finished by playing Pictionary (Girls vs. Boys) summer themed words.

6th Grade

We finished note-taking through Ch. 10 and students wrote sentences for vocab words on the flip-side of the page.

Next, we read the remainder of “Avocados” chapter aloud. Students took an online quiz on the last two chapters.

We finished class with an Esperanza Kahoot to review the “Plums” chapter.

May 9, 2024

8th Grade

Today we started with Grammar – labeling parts of the sentence. Students then diagrammed 5 of the sentences on the worksheet.

Next students completed a Subj/Pred/Direct Object Quiz on No Red Ink.

We then did a 60’s themed “Name that Tune” (Outsiders music.)

Finally, students read Ch. 10 of The Outsiders and completed vocabulary for the remaining chapters.

Everyone present – so no make-up work!!

6th Grade

We started class with a review of Parts of Speech – going over yesterday’s paper aloud/on screen together.

For the remainder of class (short period on Thursdays) students read Esperanza – first half of Ch. 10. Students completed the accompanying vocab/Read: Take Notes page.

May 8, 2024

We MAP Tested in all grades today, so we had shortened classes. We also had an excellent teacher lunch! Thanks to PTO for providing such a great treat for us!!

8th Grade

Today students answered comprehension questions for The Outsiders ch. 9.

Then they completed a Subject-Verb Agreement exercise on No Red Ink.

6th Grade

Students worked on Parts of Speech by labeling nouns/verbs/adjectives/adverbs in sentences.

They finished reading “Las Papas” in Esperanza and answered comprehension questions.

May 7, 2024

8th Grade

Grammar – Today, students labeled the parts of sentences (S-Pred.-DO/Pred Adj or Noun) Then they diagrammed those sentences. It was the first time they did diagramming from “scratch” – drawing their own diagrams…a little tougher than the ones we have used for instruction/practice.

Next, we continued Ch. 9 in The Outsiders (the rumble.) Students finished the chapter independently and wrote a paragraph on the meaning of Johnny’s final words to Ponyboy.

6th Grade

Students started class by completing a No Red Ink assignment on “Indentifying Subjects and Verbs in Sentences.”

Next we summarized our last chapter in Esperanza on summary sheets. They completed a Vocabulary paper for “Plums” and “Potatoes” chapters. We read the first half of Chapter “Papas” p. 158-167.

Finally – students worked in partners on a $100 Word Challenge (a throwback to Mr. Terupt novel.)

May 6, 2024

8th Grade

Students began class with exercises on No Red Ink on Verb Tenses. Everyone did very well!

Next, they took a quiz on The Outsiders Ch. 7-8

We reviewed the vocabulary words for Ch. 8-9 in our novel, and then students read Ch. 9 up to the start of “the rumble” noting the rules that the gangs decided they would abide by.

6th Grade

We began class by completing a Grammar worksheet together. Students learned (or reviewed) how to determine the parts of each sentence and the parts of speech.

Next we discussed the background for our novel ( to review the plot thus far. Then we read (aloud and/or with partner) p. 146-157.

May 3, 2024

6th Grade on Art field trip.

8th Grade

Students learned sentence patterns (Subj/Action Verb/Direct Object vs. Subj/Linking Verb/Pred. Adj or Pred. Noun) Then they diagrammed sentences with linking verbs.

Next we read/discussed Ch. 8 of The Outsiders together. We finished with a Kahoot on Outsiders’ slang.

No 8th Graders today – May Crowning and special activities.

Shortened 6th Grade period after lunch:

Today we read Esperanza 139-152 and completed summaries up to that point.

AR logs were due today.

May 1, 2024!

Today we had MAP (Reading) testing for the first 2.5 hours of the day, so all classes were shortened.

8th Grade

We reviewed the events of The Outsiders Ch. 7 from yesterday. Students completed comprehension questions on the chapter.

6th Grade

Students wrote letters to our Outreach senior citizens today.

We read Ch. 7 “Almonds” in Experanza and students answered comprehension questions. They worked so well, that we ended class with a kickball game before lunch!

April 30, 2024

8th Grade

Students took a quiz on The Outsiders, Ch. 5-6. Grades are posted on Option C.

We read Chapter 7 together with Audible and students completed a Kahoot on the plot of the first half of the novel.

Students also wrote their final letters of the year to our senior citizens in our Outreach program.

6th Grade

Today students did an exercise in small groups to identify and explain idioms in a series of “text messages.” After they determined the meanings (from context), we went over the beginning of a Power Point that explains each of the idioms in ordinary language.

We finished reading “Onions” in Esperanza with Audible. Students watched and read a slide show that reviewed the plot through our current chapter. Then they added information to their summary sheets.

6th graders final AR recording sheet is due on Thursday (since they have a field trip Friday.) They still should continue to read/take AR tests to complete their third trimester goals.
